How to Create a Calm, Comfortable Sleep Space for Your Cat

Cats are professional nappers, but they are also selective about where they switch off. The most expensive bed in the house will lose to a cardboard box if the box happens to feel safer, warmer or quieter.

Choose the location first

Look at where your cat already chooses to sleep. Many cats prefer a place with limited foot traffic, a view of the room and an easy exit. A bed placed in a busy hallway may be ignored even if it is comfortable.

Think in terms of security

Semi-enclosed beds, raised edges and sheltered corners can help some cats feel less exposed while resting. Others prefer open cushions where they can stretch. Your cat’s existing habits are the best guide.

Temperature changes the favourite spot

Sunny windows, radiator-adjacent corners and soft blankets often become more attractive in cooler weather. In warm conditions, cats may move to cooler floors or shaded areas. Give them options instead of trying to keep one permanent sleep location.

Keep familiar scent

When introducing a new bed, placing a familiar blanket nearby can make the area smell less unfamiliar. Avoid heavily fragranced cleaners or sprays around resting spaces.

Make leaving easy

A resting place should never feel like a trap. Keep entrances clear and avoid positioning a bed where another pet can block access.

Sleep habits vary by cat. If you notice an abrupt change in sleeping behaviour alongside reduced appetite, pain, breathing changes or other signs of illness, speak with a veterinary professional.
